At the end of 2000, SAMPO Insurance Company plc. acquired 99.999% of shares in the Lithuanian Development Bank. At that time this bank was a bank of narrow specialisation giving long-term investment credits to major enterprises.
New shareholders changed the bank's strategies. SAMPO Bankas AB is a universal bank providing all banking services to both natural and legal persons.
On 2 January 2004, SAMPO Bank plc. became a 100% owner of the shares in SAMPO Bankas AB.
On 9 December 2004, SAMPO Bankas changed its legal status from private company into public company.
